The town, designed by Maurice Desnoyers and Norbert Schoenauer, was inspired by similar projects in Sweden designed by Ralph Erskine, notably that of Svappavaara, a copper mining town in Sweden.

The project was commissioned for Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines to connect their new Bloom Lake mine (opened in 2010) near Fermont, Quebec with the existing Wabush Lake Railway in Wabush, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The nearest population centres to Labrador West is the Quebec town of Fermont, 30 km away; ports of Sept-Îles and Baie-Comeau to the south and the military town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay to the east.
