In 1694 an early school was started here by Rev. Benjamin Robinson, the local presbyterian minister (for which he was summoned to explain why to the bishop).
The actual name of the suburb is Littleover and Heatherton Village is located at its southern most boundary approaching the A38 and Findern.
After the closure of the private academies at Kendal (1753) and Findern, Derbyshire (1754), a project was launched in July 1754 for establishing in the north of England a dissenting academy by subscription.
