Lindisfarne Castle in England and Muchalls Castle (14th century) in Scotland are among many examples of buildings with surviving flagstone floors.
Flagstone quarries in the area provided income in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as lumbering income steeply declined.
Although flagstone and dimension stone are quarried from all over the state the town of Ash Fork, Arizona is well known as the center of production and has claimed itself "The Flagstone Capital of the World".
Within the area are four former flagstone quarries, which despite no longer producing the stones are now noted for the excellent preservation of the fossil fish Osteolepis.
