He was member of the board of Stockholm's folk schools (folkskola) 1862–79 and from 1863 member of the Stockholm Municipal Assembly.
Its local school, the folkskola, is today a summer hostel run by the Swedish Hiking Association.
In an attempt to make the public school system appealing to the entire population a four year middle school for students over 11 years, was established in 1903 to form a bridge between the Folkeskole and the Realskole (lower secondary school) and the Gymnasium.
