He continued on as a member of Folketinget for Det Radikale Venstre until 1928, when he became a member of the upper chamber of parliament Landsting.

In 1877 Estrup was unable to secure support for his budget bill in Folketinget, as demanded by the Danish Constitution, but chose instead to issue it as a provisional law.
In 2007, at the opening of Folketinget, Kjærsgaard claimed to have been verbally assaulted and blamed Socialist People's Party's youth group (SFU) for the incident, and demanded an apology from Villy Søvndal (leader of the party).
