Bulgarian communist Todor Angelov took part in Belgian Resistance movement, in early 1943 he was arrested and interned in the Fort Breendonk concentration camp, where he was executed in late November 1943.
The officer of the British Army designated to liberate the camp late in 1944 was himself a German, Charles Arnold-Baker an officer of MI6.
Involved in the distribution of anti-military propaganda to the German occupying forces, Améry was captured by the Nazis in July 1943 and routinely tortured at the Belgian Gestapo center at Fort Breendonk.
