Fort Des Moines

Fort Des Moines Provisional Army Officer Training School (1901-present), a U.S. Army Reserve training center south of Des Moines.

Oskaloosa, Iowa

The first white settlers arrived in 1835 led by Nathan Boone, youngest son of Daniel Boone who acting on instructions from Stephen W. Kearny selected it to be the first site of Fort Des Moines on a high ridge between what Skunk River and Des Moines River.


John B. Coulter

After the war, Coulter served in the War Department's Personnel Branch, and then assumed command of 2nd Squadron 14th Cavalry at Fort Des Moines, Iowa.
