It was never completed and was dedicated as Fort Moore on July 4, 1847, named after Captain Benjamin D. Moore, 1st Dragoons, one of 22 Americans killed in the Battle of San Pasqual in San Diego County, on December 6, 1846.
Prior to the famous Trail of Tears, much of the western part of South Carolina was controlled by native-American (Indian) tribes.
