Following the 1989 Revolution, Mitrea became president of the trade union Frăţia, and after Frăţia merged with another union in 1993, he continued until 1995 as head of the National Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Romania - Brotherhood.
It was created from the 1993 merger of the National Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Romania (CNSLR) and Frăţia.
