Francis Basset, 1st Baron de Dunstanville and Basset (1757–1835), his son, the first of the Barons Basset

Illogan

It was part of an ornamental garden for the old Rectory now called Maningham - now a private house - built of bath stone in 1783 for the Rev John Basset, brother of Lord De ­Dunstanville whose monument is seen on Carn Brea.

Portreath

In the late 1770s, during the American Revolutionary War, lieutenant-colonel of the North Devon militia, Francis Basset, commanded local miners to fortify the port, which helped counter a Franco-Spanish invasion fleet gathered as part of the European theatre of the war, some of them still standing to this day.
