He soon gained a great reputation for small landscapes and sea-pieces with figures, and for fairs and peasant scenes in the style of Ostade, Berchem, and Poelenburg.

His pictures are frequently met with in private collections in England and in public galleries abroad, notably Brunswick, Dresden, and Vienna.
It consists of three connected buildings located in the city center, near the Central Station and the Binnenalster lake.
A large number of his medals and plaquettes can be viewed in the Kunsthalle Hamburg and the Musée Oscar Roty in Jargeau, France.
Heckscher was commissioned in 1931 to paint a portrait of Gustav Pauli, the director of Kunsthalle Hamburg.
