Spens was the eldest of the six children of Nathaniel Spens, a chartered accountant and managing director of state liquidation, born in Glasgow and of Frimley, Surrey, and Emily Jessie Connal.
Bristow was born in Hong Kong, and attended Tomlinscote School and Sixth Form College in Frimley.
CTC Frimley Park is located on a large site immediately to the South West of Frimley Park Hospital, situated near Junction 4 of the M3.
The Frimley Lodge Miniature Railway is operated by the Frimley and Ascot Locomotive Club and is located within Frimley Lodge Park, Surrey.
