On January 26, 2001 a devastating earthquake centred near Bhuj, measuring 6.9 on the richter scale, struck the city.
Khengarji I, thus expelling Jam Rawal, assumed the title of 1st Rao of Cutch in 1548 and was crowned at Rapar but in 1549 he shifted the capital to Bhuj.
They also sent medicine, tents and food to the people of Bhuj immediately following the earthquake.
Mothala is located on the rail line from Bhuj to Naliya; formerly military only, it now carries commercial freight and passengers, and is scheduled to be upgraded from metre to broad gauge.
One son Dileep Singh moved there around 2001, but died in Bhuj during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake.
