In 1981 he starred in Funny Man (1981), a touching series about a family music hall act, written by Adele Rose and based on Jewel's father's company in the 1920s and 1930s.
Della Rocco is a friend of The Boondock Saints writer and director Troy Duffy and his role was written specifically for him, playing a character also named David Della Rocco, bringing many of his real-life mannerisms and flair to the character, as well as the character's nickname, "The Funny Man".
Wyllie had a Top 20 hit with his cover of Ray Stevens' song "Funny Man" and an Australian No. 1 with "The Star", both in 1969.
On an interesting side note, Stevens left Mercury in 1965 and signed with Monument Records, where he re-recorded "Funny Man," "Harry the Hairy Ape" and his previous hit "Ahab the Arab."
His re-recording of "Funny Man" was included on his third album, Even Stevens (released in 1968), while the re-recordings of the last two songs were included on his fourth album, Gitarzan.
