The battlefield lies on the border between the modern-day districts of Lüneburg and Lüchow-Dannenberg, between Oldendorf an der Göhrde and Göhrde.
And Göhrde refers to the more or less wooded terrain of the Göhrde State Forest (rather than the administrative area) which is located on a rolling area of high ground on the northwest part of the ridge.
On clayey soils there are the remnants of a natural deciduous forest vegetation, especially in the Göhrde.
The buildings of the old Göhrde hunting lodge still stand in the village of Göhrde in the heart of the state forest.
