The first order for the Turkish Navy was signed during April 1983 with two MEKO 200TN built in Germany and two built in the Gölcük shipyards in Turkey.
In 1980, an Ay class submarine of 1,000 tons was constructed at the Gölcük Naval Shipyard marking an important turning point in the Turkish shipbuilding history.
