The film was directed by Gabriel Pascal, and was the last film personally supervised by Shaw himself.
He died in Manhattan in 1991 at the age of 97, survived by his second wife Valerie Delacorte (whose first husband was the Hungarian producer Gabriel Pascal), two sons, three daughters, 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
It was written in 1938-39 as an "educational history film" for film director Gabriel Pascal in the aftermath of Pygmalions cinema triumph.
