As chief commander of the artillery within the 19th Army of the Soviet Union in July 1941, Kamera lost contact with the 19th Army during operations near Smolensk, but succeeded in assisting Konstantin Rokossovsky's improvized counterattack against the advancing forces of Germany's Army Group Center at the heights of Yartsevo in Smolensk Oblast.
During the Soviet times the settlement briefly belonged to Gomel guberniya of the Russian SFSR, then it was transferred to Smolensk Oblast of the RSFSR, and the population dwindled significantly.
The drainage basin of the Usvyacha includes the center and the southeast of Usvyachsky District, the southwest of Kunyinsky District, the northwest of Velizhsky District of Smolensk Oblast, as well as the northwest of Vitebsk Raion.
