He received the George Robert White Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society (1970), the Veitch Memorial Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society (1969) and the Medal of Honor from the Garden Club of America (1965).
Among its founding members was author and gardener Helena Rutherfurd Ely (1858-1920).
