2 unusual facts about Gaspare Spontini

Agnes of Hohenstaufen

The opera Agnes of Hohenstaufen by the Italian composer Gaspare Spontini had its premiere on 12 June 1829 at the Royal Opera in Berlin.

Louis Hersent

In 1831 Hersent made his last appearance at the Salon with portraits of Louis Philippe, Marie Amélie and the duke of Montpensier; that of the king though good, is not equal to the portrait of Spontini (Berlin), which is probably Hersent's chef-d'œuvre.

Lalla-Rookh

It is also the basis of the operas Lalla-Rûkh, festival pageant (1821) by Gaspare Spontini, partly reworked into Nurmahal oder das Rosenfest von Caschmir (1822), Lalla-Roukh by Félicien David (1862), Feramors by Anton Rubinstein (1863), and The Veiled Prophet by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1879).
