Gedan-no-kamae is called porta di ferro larga ('wide iron door' or 'wide iron gate') in the Italian school of swordsmanship.
Eddie Leilani Kamae was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised both there and in Lahaina, Maui.
He is easily recognizable by his distinct batting stance in which he holds the bat high above his head, much like the jōdan no kamae seen in Kendo (a Japanese martial art).
Similar stances to Jōdan-no-kamae are also found in German and Italian schools of the longsword.

Another tradition that includes this posture is the English master George Silver's teachings, where it is known as the "open fight."
In 1949, Kinney discovered Eddie Kamae and took him on tour and finally, in 1959, adding Kamae to the "Royal Hawaiian Hotel Orchestra".
