John Cassavetes was inspired to write A Woman Under the Influence when his wife Gena Rowlands expressed a desire to appear in a play about the difficulties faced by contemporary women.
The couple had two children: a son, David, and a daughter, Virginia, who is best known as the Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated actress Gena Rowlands.
The film starred Gena Rowlands, who was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie for her performance.

Inspired and sometimes blinded by their love, Len (Josh Hartnett), Mia (Rosario Dawson), Andy (Frank Langella), Esther (Gena Rowlands), Anna (Teresa Palmer) and Erik (Penn Badgley) are as flawed and beautiful as any of the billions who are facing this human-made biological disaster.
The album title itself is perhaps a reference to a line of dialogue spoken by the character of Mabel Longhetti (Gena Rowlands) in the 1974 John Cassavetes post-modern drama A Woman Under the Influence.
