Henry Newbolt

The engagement mentioned in verse two is the Battle of Abu Klea in Sudan in January 1885 during the unsuccessful expedition to rescue General Gordon.

HMVS Childers

Later that month, she was in Malta on her delivery voyage to Victoria with HMVS Albert and HMVS Victoria when news of General Gordon's death at Khartoum arrived.

Livery Dole

It was erected in memory of General Gordon who was killed in the Siege of Khartoum in 1885, and paid for by Prebendary Barnes, vicar of Heavitree, who was a friend of the General's.

Viscount St Vincent

His great-grandson, the 4th Viscount, was part of the force that was sent in 1884 to rescue General Gordon at Khartoum, and died from wounds received at the Battle of Abu Klea in January 1885.
