The Funeaux family are recorded as lords of the manor thereafter untiol the early 14th century, when Geoffrey le Scrope bought the lands.
It was created on 25 November 1350 as a barony by writ for Henry le Scrope, son of Geoffrey le Scrope and first cousin of Richard le Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton.
He had at least six knights in his train, and took the field in the campaign which ended bloodlessly at Buironfosse (1339).
