The spring was discovered and the name recorded by explorer George Fletcher Moore in 1836.
He named it after the colonial schooner Champion, in which George Fletcher Moore had travelled to the region in the preceding year.
The area was first explored by George Fletcher Moore in 1846 and has been known by that name since Moore recorded it on his maps.
