In December 1798 he was appointed by Lord Mornington, the governor-general, to command the field army which was intended to attack Tipu Sultan, and in a few months of campaigning Harris reduced the Kingdom of Mysore and stormed the great stronghold of Seringapatam, where the Tipu died in its defence.
The Madras Army participated in the relief of Cawnpore in which Lieutenant-Colonel James George Smith Neill of the Madras Fusiliers indulged in indiscriminate massacre of Indians and was eventually killed.

Harris was beset will ill-health and remained bed-ridden for some time in the city of Pau in France where he worked for a time for the Church of England.

The University of Madras was established in 1857 when Harris was the Governor.
In the same fixture the following year, when CJ Ottaway scored his celebrated 108 to seal victory for Eton by an innings and nineteen runs, Harris went runless, and, in 1870 (by which time he was on the Kent Committee), he managed just twelve and seven.

Numerous memorial-plaques and monuments exist within the church of which two, that of Sir Barry Close, who was Adjutant General to Gen. George Harris at the Siege of Seringapatam, and gave his name to Closepet, and that of Lt. Col. Joseph Moorhouse, who was killed at the Siege of Bangalore, in the Third Anglo-Mysore War, would be of particular interest to the historian.
He probably participated in the battles of Lexington and Concord but at this time the Grenadier Company was commanded by Captain George Harris (later Baron Harris).
The town is believed to be named after John Harris (1819-1895) and George Harris (1831-1891) who had a store and cotton ginnery in the area.
He was then appointed to the Hussar, going out to the West Indies, and was reported by her captain, George Harris, for his conduct in the capture of pirates at the Isle of Pines.
It was during one of those travels that he met Harriet Beecher Stowe, who was so impressed by Clarke and his story that she would base the character George Harris in her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin on Clarke.
A few of his most recognizable roles were as George Harris in the 1933 Cecil B. DeMille-directed crime-drama This Day and Age, as Neptune in the 1935 John S. Robertson-directed romantic drama Grand Old Girl and as Mose in the 1935 Sam Newfield-directed adventure film Racing Luck.
