However, in May 1880, a new British Liberal government recalled the Viceroy of India, Lord Lytton from India and replaced him with Lord Ripon who had instructions to bring all troops out of Afghanistan.
In the earlier of those years he was an ardent supporter of Lord Ripon's policy, which the majority of Anglo-Indians strongly disapproved.
The name was later changed to Ripon College, named after the British Viceroy George Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon.
