After nineteen previews, it opened on April 29, 1985 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where it enjoyed a sold out limited run of only 93 performances; the all-star cast that included Rex Harrison, Claudette Colbert, Lynn Redgrave, John Michael King, and George Rose.
The opening night cast of the Broadway production starred George Rose, Cleo Laine, John Herrera, Howard McGillin, Patti Cohenour, and Jana Schneider, who were all nominated for 1986 Tony Awards for their performances, as well as Betty Buckley in the title role.
Directed by Cy Feuer with choreography by Danny Daniels, the cast included George Rose as Henry Hobson, Norman Wisdom as Will Mossop, Louise Troy as Maggie Hobson, and Ed Bakey as George Beenstock.
William Stewart Rose (1775 - 1843) was a British poet and translator, son of George Rose, who held various Government offices, including that of Treasurer of the Navy.
