Two of Martha Washington's grandchildren were part of the First Family: Nelly Custis (born 1779) and "Wash" Custis (born 1781).
John Custis died in September 1781, and in 1799 his son, George Washington Parke Custis ("G.W.P.")—step-grandson of George Washington—inherited the site.
His wife Martha, two of her grandchildren, Eleanor Parke Custis and George Washington Parke Custis, and more of their servants and staff joined him late in the stay.
