According to the University of West Georgia’s web page, Beard began as the last principal of the Fourth District Agricultural & Mechanical School, later becoming the first president of the same institution after it grew to become the West Georgia College.
In 1995, Helminiak accepted a teaching position at the University of West Georgia (then, West Georgia College), where he has remained except for advanced training in counseling at Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute.
He also obtained a PhD in psychology from the University of West Georgia, then known as West Georgia College, where he later became a professor in that topic.
