Jernigan won reelection as mayor in 1989, beating back a challenge from Democratic candidate Raymond F. Clevenger, who had served as a U.S. Representative from Michigan's 11th district from 1965-67.
His father and his uncle, Robert Hines (father of Gerald D. Hines), emigrated to the United States when jobs became scarce in Canada.
He later resumed the practice of law and campaigned in 1989 for Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, losing to Republican incumbent Gerald D. Jernigan.
Lorge comes from a large and extended political heritage, his father Gerald D. Lorge was one of the longest serving Wisconsin State Senators and his brother William served as a Wisconsin Representative for 10 years.
