The mayor has also supported now-former U.S. Representative John E. Sweeney (R-Clifton Park).
In the 1997 primary, McEneny unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Mayor Gerald Jennings for the Democratic nomination for Mayor of the City of Albany.
The ceremony was attended by numerous campus leaders including Provost Susan Herbst, SUNY Chancellor John Ryan, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Congressman John E. Sweeney, and Albany Mayor Gerald Jennings.
Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings then refused to allow EMS and fire response from the city to cover Indian Quad and the Recreation and Convocation Center (today the SEFCU Arena), both in Guilderland.
