He was voted into the German Academy of Sciences and was made an honorary doctor of the University of Stuttgart.

He was an honorary member of the British Pharmacological Society, the German Pharmacological Society and the Czechoslovakian Medical Society of Jan Evangelista PurkynÄ› and a member of the Leopoldina and a Fellow of the Royal Society (elected 1942) .
Also in that year, he was given a position at the Akademie der Naturforscher, and soon afterwards became lecturer in Rhetoric, Antiquities, and Poetry at the University of Helmstedt.
