His father, Juan Bilbao, born in Getxo (Bizkaia), had emigrated "to the Americas" at the age of 12, in 1870.

From 1954 he lived in Getxo with his wife and children, and was active for the Basque nationalist cause.

The current name, "Kalimotxo", is attributed to the "Antzarrak cuadrilla" ("Geese young friends circle"), which supposedly coined it during the 1972 Puerto Viejo festivities (in Algorta, Getxo, Basque Country).
A new station in the municipality of Getxo called "Ibarbengoa-Getxo" was expected to be open in 2010, but was delayed until early 2012.
After playing the saxophone for only six months, he was picked out to play at the Getxo Jazz Festival in Bilbao.
