Those rifles obtained by the SS normally had their original markings fully or partially removed and replaced with stylized Totenkopf markings.
However, this was unnecessary on a sporting rifle and the Mauser M98 and M1903 Springfield type cock-on-opening bolt was preferred by American sportsmen so the action was developed accordingly.

Although Lee Enfields were the most common, conversion of other rifles mostly suited to rimmed cartridges such as P14 Enfield, Martini Enfield, 1885 and 1895 Winchesters were often seen, as well as 98 and 96 Mausers.
The weapon was shorter, (similar in length to the Karabiner 98k) when compared with the Gewehr 98 and the Arisaka Type 38.
