Gillespie Dam

In anticipation of the formation of the United States Highway System in 1926, the Highway Department commissioned the construction of a steel truss bridge just downstream from the dam.

East of Yuma, the old route splits off Interstate 8 and parallels it to Gila Bend, it then heads to the north, crossing the Gila River near Gillespie Dam, and heads east through towns of Buckeye, Goodyear, and Avondale before reaching the city of Phoenix.
