Well known bands have also played Daft Friday in recent years, including: Arcade Fire in 2008, Jack Penate in 2009, Bombay Bicycle Club in 2010, Frightened Rabbit in 2011, Basshunter in 2012 and Chvrches in 2013.
He was educated at the independent George Heriot's School in Edinburgh, and the University of Glasgow, where he received an MA in Politics and Economics in 1972 and was president of the union.

He was chairman of the Labour Club (1948–50), then chairman of the National Association of Labour Students in 1949–1950, and finally president of Glasgow University Union in 1951–52, and of the Scottish Union of Students, 1954–55.
