Under pressure from the New Zealand government, a sophisticated fibreglass production unit was developed in Glenfield, Auckland to meet the new health and safety regulations for fiberglass construction.
A new station was built south-east of the original station as part of the extension of the line to the Main South Line at Glenfield opening in August 1987 with the original station closed and demolished.
Just before reaching the station the line passed through Glenfield Tunnel, which at 1 mile 36 yards long was at the time the world's longest railway tunnel and was built by Robert Stephenson.
The incident was made into the movie Mr Reliable starring Colin Friels and Jacqueline McKenzie.
