The lyric "Go West, young man" is a reference to a famous phrase by Horace Greeley, who, in a July 13, 1865 editorial, famously advised: "Go West, young man, go West and grow up with the country."

Josiah Bushnell Grinnell claimed in his autobiography that Horace Greeley first addressed the advice to him in 1833, before sending him off to Illinois to report on the Illinois Agricultural State Fair.
Grinnell was the young man to whom Horace Greeley is quoted as having given the famous advice, "Go West, young man." Grinnell was also involved in railway building and was instrumental in the move of Grinnell College, known at the time as Iowa College, from Davenport to the newly established town of Grinnell.
