Francisco Palóu

In 1774, Palou accompanied Captain Rivera's expedition to the Bay of San Francisco and on December 4, planted the cross on a hill he named "Lobos" (wolves), which sits in clear view of the Golden Gate and Pacific Ocean.

Golden Gate

Configured as a rectangle, it is similar in shape but 174 acres (0.7 km², 0.27 mi²) larger than Central Park in New York, to which it is often compared.

In 2007, it was ranked fifth on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.

With 13 million visitors annually, Golden Gate is the fifth most visited city park in The United States after Central Park in New York City, Lincoln Park in Chicago, and Balboa Park and Mission Bay Park in San Diego.

Originally named simply the Southern Gate, it was one of the three main entrances to the walled city, along with the Lyadski and Zhydivski (Polish and Jewish) Gates.

Later a similar name was given to the gates of Vladimir city where one of the Monomakh's descendants, Andrei I Bogolyubsky, established his own state, the Grand Duchy of Vladimir.


Area code 415

For a short time in the early 1950s, area code 318 was temporarily used, initially by customers in Englewood, New Jersey participating in the first customer direct distance dialing experiment to reach San Francisco as well as some areas north of the Golden Gate.

Frank Baron

Baron was perhaps best known in the Northern California Bay Area for his structural design work on the Dumbarton, Golden Gate, and Bay Bridges, as well as for his role in designing the roof structure of the St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco.
