In April 1724, Agaja conquered the town of Godomey and in 1726 the King of Gomè transferred his allegiance from the King of Whydah to Agaja.

He has conducted high intensity executive workshops with corporate clients across the USA and South East Asia, including P&G, GOME, Haier, Samsung, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Nokia, Toyota and Motorola.
The city is also a large center for retail and wholesale commercial activities with operations of major domestic and international general retailers such as Wal-Mart, Carrefour, RT-Mart, Beijing Hualian, Parkson, and Xingli Group as well as consumer electronics and appliance sellers Gome and Suning.
From 1 November 2012, oversight of SOTA was taken over by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), which is helmed by Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information.
Soon after SOTA was incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) and installed a formal board of directors including such typographic luminaries as Hermann Zapf, Matthew Carter, and Allan Haley.
