Brown was Resident Magistrate at Greenough until 1869, when he was appointed Government Resident and Resident Magistrate at Geraldton following the death of Alfred Durlacher.
Later under direction from Government Resident Robert John Sholl, Wedge was given the task of exploring Port Hedland as an alternative port since, although Roebourne was chosen for a settlement, Roebourne's distance from the coast was found to be a disadvantage.
The Gardens were also the home for over 100 years for 'Harriet', a tortoise reportedly collected by Charles Darwin during his visit to the Galápagos Islands in 1835 and donated to the Gardens in 1860 by John Clements Wickham, former commander of the HMS Beagle and later 'Government Resident' for Moreton Bay.
They also proved successful, as did many others, including (to name but a few) Charles Harper, who built his own boat, the Amateur; Charles Broadhurst a noted entrepreneur and at least two sons of Government Resident RJ Sholl.
