The town is a popular tourist location, at which visitors tend to stop on their way into the Great Smoky Mountains.
The tower has an outdoor observation level that provides a 360 degree view of the Great Smoky Mountains and the city of Gatlinburg.

Mountains-to-Sea Trail: Commonly called the MST, this long-distance trail passes through the park, as it transverses North Carolina from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks.
Housed within the office complex are nearly 1,000,000 original design records detailing work on many of America’s most treasured landscapes including the U. S. Capitol and White House Grounds; Great Smoky Mountains and Acadia National Parks; Yosemite Valley; New York's Central Park; and whole park systems in cities such as Buffalo, Seattle, Boston and Louisville.
The new institution was named Hiwassee, taken from the Cherokee word “Ayuwasi,” which means “meadow place at the foot of the hills” and is reflective of the beautiful region at the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains where the campus is located.
It is, however, one of only three remaining lookout towers in the park (not including the fire tower of Mount Cammerer), the other two being at Mount Sterling and Shuckstack.
