Often grown as an ornamental, but occurs naturally north of Greymouth and Kaikoura near the sea and, as the name suggests usually on rocks.

The New Zealand Midland Railway Company partially constructed the Midland line between Christchurch and Greymouth and the Nelson railway in the South Island.
A modern purpose-built facility has been built in Greymouth, while specialist campuses are also located at Auckland, Palmerston North, Hamilton, Christchurch, Reefton, Wanaka, Invercargill and Westport.
