The project to place sculptures in the forest was started by the Grizedale Society in 1977 and won the 1990 Prudential Award for the Arts.
The couple owned Ford lodge at Grizedale and planted many thousands of larch trees in the valley and on the surrounding hills and moorland which effectively started Grizedale Forest.
Like his parents before him, he planted vast numbers of larch trees in the valley, continuing the development and growth of Grizedale Forest.
