Bessheim is a mountain lodge in Sjodalen and is situated 964 metres above sea level next to Øvre Sjodalsvatnet on the mountain passage between Valdres and Gudbrandsdalen (Riksveg 51 over Valdresflya).
Once his unit had caught up with cabinet's convoy near Fåvang, he learned that their mission was to form the vanguard for the advancing convoy as it proceeded north through Gudbrandsdalen.
He published the three-volume series Gudbrandsdalen gjennom tidene in cooperation with Sigurd Grieg.
On his journey through the valley of Gudbrandsdalen, Peter Christen Asbjørnsen, well known for his compilations of old Norwegian legends and fairy-tales, stayed in Høvringen in 1842.
Pillarguri first appears in written form in Sagn, samlede i Gudbrandsdalen om Slaget ved Kringen, 26de August 1612 written during 1838 by Hans Peter Schnitler Krag, the minister in Vågå.
Werenskiold made field studies in Telemark and Gudbrandsdalen in his younger days, and later focused on studies at Svalbard and of glaciers in Jotunheimen.
