Some still call it Ballon de Guebwiller, after the name of the closest city, Guebwiller, located 8 km to the east.
Katia Krafft (née Catherine Joséphine Conrad, Mulhouse, 17 April 1942 – 3 June 1991) and her husband, Maurice Krafft (Guebwiller, 25 March 1946 – 3 June 1991) were French volcanologists who died in a pyroclastic flow on Mount Unzen, in Japan, on June 3, 1991.
Conrad Schlumberger (2 October 1878 in Guebwiller – 9 May 1936 in Stockholm) and Marcel Schlumberger (21 June 1884 in Guebwiller – 9 May 1953 in Val-Richer) were brothers from the Alsace region of the German Empire in what is now modern France.
