The aesthetic environment later became the home of Clokey's most famous character, Gumby, whose name derives from his childhood experiences during summer visits to his grandfather's farm, when he enjoyed playing with the clay and mud mixture called "gumbo".

Arthur "Art" Clokey (October 12, 1921 – January 8, 2010) was an American pioneer in the popularization of stop motion clay animation, best known as the co-creator of the character Gumby.
Besides Flaming Carrot Comics and Mysterymen, Burden wrote a Gumby story, a two-part Cholly & Flytrap story with Arthur Suydam, and Robot Comics, a series which was reprised as the "Robot Crime" story for the 20th anniversary of Heavy Metal.
It is a play on the official motto Semper Fidelis, usually abbreviated Semper Fi, which means "Always Faithful", and that of the US Coast Guard, Semper Paratus, meaning "Always Ready." Semper Gumby, referring to the cartoon character Gumby, means "Always Flexible."
In the United Kingdom, the habit of wearing a handkerchief with tied corners on one's head at the beach has become a seaside postcard stereotype, referenced by the Gumby characters in Monty Python's Flying Circus.
