Matemera was the son of a village headman, living near the town of Guruve, Mashonaland in the far north of what was, in 1946, Southern Rhodesia.
Winter-Irving maintained close contact with the Tengenenge Sculpture Community near Guruve, which she often visited and where she taught painting to the children of the sculptors who worked there.
Born in the Guruve district, Chakanyuka completed his schooling in 1960, and traveled to Nyanga to look for work.
In 1982, Masaya went to Guruve to work with Brighton Sango, a relationship which ended with the latter's death in 1995.
Born northwest of Guruve, he learned to sculpt by working with his cousin, Henry Munyaradzi.
A native of Chitaunhike in the Guruve district, he left school at 18 and began sculpting in 1987, working with Brighton Sango.
