Gutnick's grandson, Moshe Hecht, is a singer/songwriter and is the lead singer of the Jewish folk rock group Moshe Hecht Band.

Gutnick was born in Zolotonosha, Ukraine; soon afterwards his family moved to Tel Aviv, and then in 1927 to London, where his father, Mordechai Ze'ev Gutnick, a graduate of the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva, served as a Chabad rabbi.

In 1999, Gutnick along with partner Robert Champion de Crespigny was found to have illegally structured a takeover of Great Central Mining.

In the teeth of that application prepared by Geoffrey Robertson QC, Tim Robertson SC, London based Human Rights lawyer, Mark Stephens (solicitor) and Sydney based lawyer, Paul Reidy the case was settled on 15 November 2004, Dow Jones settled the case, agreeing to pay Gutnick some of his legal fees.
